Are you struggling to start a weight training habit?
Me too! Here’s a picture into my brain: “Monday morning again. I WILL start strength training this week. I can’t believe I blew it off all last week AGAIN! I don’t have any willpower. Why can’t I figure this out? Everyone else seems to not have any problem getting stronger. I’m a loser and this bed is SO cozy!”
If you have ever thought any of my thoughts listed about, I’ll let you in on a little secret. YOU ARE COMPLETELY NORMAL! 😊 Starting a new habit is hard, and the normal part of your brain produces a bit of anxiety (because it is new), and reminds us how very warm your bed is instead of putting on your workout clothes.
I have an amazing exercise that I recommend that will help you be successful in starting new habits in your life. It is the power of why.
Let’s use my real-life example above to play!
Decision: I am going to strength train 2 times next week.
Why? “Because I want to lose weight and look better in my clothes.” FUN FACT: You never want your why to be from a negative place. Desiring to lose weight can stem from my being unhappy with where I am or ashamed. Let’s try again.
Why do I want to strength train? “Because I am 58 and don’t want to lose strength as I age.”
Why don’t I want to lose strength? “Because if I lose strength, I might not be able to ride my motorcycle any longer, or hike when I want to, or play with my grandchildren. So, I might not live my life the way I want to.”
Now we have the money thought! Decision: I am going to strength train 2 times next week because as I age, I want to still be able to do whatever I want to! Can you see that already we are coming at this decision from a place of decisiveness and power (not willpower or discipline).
Fast forward to Monday morning, tucked up in your warm, cozy bed. Thought, “I’ll start tomorrow, it isn’t that big of a deal.” In that moment your brain pipes up, “wait a minute, it is a big deal. I don’t want to lose strength and not be able to hike or ride my motorcycle because I chose to be cozy!”.
The power in that thought can give you the momentum in that moment to get out of bed and do that new thing.
There you have it, my go to exercise to ask a few innocent questions, clarify what you want in life, and then step into your power to go do it. Let’s get to it people, those weights are waiting!
